Checklist : Piping Project Start Kick Off Meeting

Before attending Project Start Kick Off Meeting, Piping Lead Engineer shall review Basic Engineering Package and generate queries for any missing information, contradicting information or ambiguous information.  Following data must be present in BEP Package :

Reference Documents

  1. Project design basis.
  2. Piping design basis.
  3. P & I D.
  4. Equipment data sheets.
  5. Piping material specification.
  6. Site survey drawing and Site master plan.
  7.  Client’s/ Process Licensor’s design standards.
  8. Existing facility documentation.

General Client Requirements

  1. Scope of work and Split of work.
  2. Applicable codes and Standards.
  3. Review requirement.
  4. Project schedule.
  5. Documentation requirement.
  6. Design basis for stress analysis and support design.
  7. Design basis for 3D model/ Usage of software.
  8. Local regulation and Statutory requirement.

Client Preferences for Pipe Rack/Sleepers

  1. preference of elevated rack v/s pipe sleepers v/s inside trench v/s buried pipes and extent of the same.
  2. Material of Construction : Concrete, steel or combination of both.
  3. Minimum Pipe Rack elevation in general and at road/ rail crossing
  4. Tier to tier distance.
  5. Spare in each tier for future expansion.
  6. Cable tray/ duct routing preference – combined pipes and cables tier or separate?
  7. Walkways between cable trays for cable pulling/ maintenance.
  8. Location of rack longitudinal beam at tier elevation or in between tier elevation.
  9. Conventional rack or modular rack. If modular, philosophy of design, erection etc.
  10. In case of air fin cooler on top of the rack, operating/ maintenance platform requirement and access.
  11. In case of equipment supported on top of the rack, maintenance requirement, erection methods etc.
  12. Cable tray layout – flat type of tree type.
  13. Usage of Low friction rods, low friction sliding plates etc.
  14. Movement requirement below the racks

Client Preferences for Building/Structure

  1. Concrete, steel, combination of both.
  2. Building sides closed or open. If closed, what type of enclosure :  with doors windows, cladding etc.
  3. Minimum floor to floor height requirement.
  4. Minimum ground floor plinth elevation requirement.
  5. Roof configuration.
  6. Floor finishes – Type of floor.
  7. Encasement of steel sections.
  8. Floor and wall cut out type – precast or at site, with or without sleeves, sealed or unsealed etc.
  9. Floor drainage philosophy.
  10. Need for foundation for small equipment or can be supported off the floor.
  11. Extent of paving out side building.
  12. Architectural features if any.
  13. Expansion requirement/ future space/ provision to be made at present for any future requirement.
  14. Equipment erection philosophy within building
  15. Preference on equipment support and mounting arrangement.

Client Preferences for Plot Plan Layout

  1. HAZOP Study.
  2. Any Specific Hazard Requirements.
  3. Client’s standard/ preference for locating various facilities on the plot.
  4. Client’s standard/ preference for equipment spacing.
  5. Minimum foundation heights for equipment and supports.
  6. Maintenance requirement such as crane, monorail, lifting beams etc.
  7. Road width, roads cross-section and type of road etc.
  8. Future expansion provision and consideration
  9. Operating access requirement for instrument valves manways, handholes etc.
  10. Storage warehouse sizes, no. of days storage for raw material, intermediate, finished product, waste, by products etc. and their loading and unloading consideration”
  11. Non plant facilities requirement.
  12. Extent of paving, drainage requirements and containment consideration.
  13. Architectural consideration.
  14. Equipment erection consideration for very heavy, very tall and fragile equipment.
  15. Understanding operating and maintenance requirement for the entire plant and individual equipment.

Client Preferences for Stress Analysis

  1. Stress analysis design basis.
  2. Stress Critical Lines List preparation Criteria.
  3. Design codes to be used. e.g. B31.3, B31.1 etc.
  4. Wind loading data and earthquake zone for the location of plant.
  5. Additional external loading consideration such as snow load, solar effect etc.
  6. Fabricated equipment acceptable equipment nozzle loads for various sizes and pound rating nozzles.
  7. Proprietary/ Rotary equipment acceptable equipment external nozzle loading for equipment such as pumps, turbines, compressors, air fin coolers, fired heaters etc.
  8. Package equipment battery limit tie in point acceptable nozzle loading.
  9. Relief valve force calculation – client’s standard.
  10. Software to be used for stress analysis.
  11. Documentation requirement.
  12. Review requirement by client.

Client Preferences for Pipe Supports

  1. Support Design Criteria.
  2. Support Design Guidelines.
  3. Client support standard or company support standard to be used.
  4. Up to what size of lines will be field supported.
  5. Type of structural steel sections.
  6. Any specific requirement of using a particular type of support.
  7. Loading/ height criteria for determining whether to be designed by civil group or piping group.
  8. Spring Vendor List.
  9. Use of low friction slide plates (PTFE) in supports near critical equipment, high expansion area etc.
  10. Vessel supported pipes – cleats standard.
  11. Support Documentation required.
  12. Pipe support on model – Logical or Physical Supports.
  13. Support marking on isometrics or on layout.
  14. Special pipe supports Format.
  15. Support MTO Format.
  16. Support design software to use.
