Magnetic Particle Examination of Piping Systems is a non-destructive testing (NDT) method used to locate surface and shallow subsurface defects in Piping Welds. By applying a magnetic field and fine iron particles to the weld, inspectors can visually spot flaws—like cracks or voids—where particles cluster.
How the Test Works
- Magnetization: A magnetic field is induced into the weld using an electromagnetic yoke, permanent magnets, or a central conductor.
- Magnetic Flux Leakage: If there is a crack or discontinuity in the weld, the magnetic field cannot cross the gap and “leaks” out of the weld’s surface.
- Particle Application: Finely milled ferromagnetic particles (either dry powder or suspended in liquid) are applied to the surface.
- Indication: The leaked magnetic field attracts the particles, creating a visible outline of the defect right on the surface of the weld.
Types of MPI Techniques
- Wet vs. Dry Particles: Dry powders are excellent for field inspections and rough surfaces, while wet fluorescent particles offer the highest sensitivity for microscopic flaws.
- Visible vs. Fluorescent: Visible particles use contrasting colors (like red or black) to stand out against the metal. Fluorescent particles glow brightly under ultraviolet (UV) light, making them ideal for finding very tiny cracks.
- Direction of Magnetization: Because cracks are best detected when the magnetic field is at a 90-degree angle to the defect, inspectors often test the same area in two perpendicular directions.
Common Applications & Advantages
- Industries: Extensively used in manufacturing, welding, aerospace, automotive, and oil/gas pipelines to inspect engine components, castings, forgings, and structural welds.
- Benefits: It delivers instant results, requires minimal surface preparation compared to other NDT methods, and is highly effective at finding fatigue cracks.
- Limitations: It is strictly limited to ferromagnetic materials and only identifies defects that are on or very near the surface.
